JoAnn Thompson has been an editor with a publishing house for fourteen years. It wasn’t her dream job, but it was a job close to her dream. When she enrolled in college JoAnn was going to be an published author. Her English professor told her that she was a very gifted writer.
Five years later JoAnn received her master degree in fine arts. She had written several articles for magazines and was the editor for the literary review of the college where she did her graduate work. Her thesis became her first novel. It was very easy getting an agent but getting published was much harder. Her agent couldn’t get her a publishing deal.
When her agent dropped her JoAnn gave up her dream of being a published author. She had two choices; she could teach others how to write or she could work for a publishing house as an editor. She chose the publishing house.
Now JoAnn is forty years old and disillusioned with her life. One day she sat down at her laptop and wrote in her journal.
What happened to me? Where did I get lost in this maze of life? How did I become a maker of authors when I should be an author myself? How do I get out of this life? This is not the life I want. How can I get out? Please Lord show me the way.
Three days later JoAnn was assigned a book to edit. It was written by a man who was seventy seven years, his first book. It was a memoir of his life. This man worked in corporate America for thirty years when he realized that he was wasting his life, at the age of fifty two years he quit his job, sold all of his belongings and moved to Saint Croix to create paintings. For the last twenty five years he lived his dream life and his paintings were sold all over the world.
JoAnn cried as she read this story. She identified with this story. She saw her way out.
A year later JoAnn wrote and published her first novel.
