It was with great sadness that I received the news that Apostle C. Peter Wagner a general in the faith transitioned to heaven. Apostle Peter has been one of the most consistent voice in the body of Christ in the last four decades and his influence has reached many in the nations of the earth bringing the body into new expressions of restoration and kingdom advancement.
My reflections of this great man spans the last twenty-three years. Twenty three years ago I was a first time pastor in West Virginia and one day in the local bookstore I found this book “YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS CAN HELP YOUR CHURCH GROW.” It was written by Apostle Peter Wagner. I’d taken a course on spiritual gifts in bible college a few years before but this book gripped me and set me on a path to pursue Holy Spirit and activate my spiritual gifts and the gifts of the congregations I led as pastor. The first manual I wrote as a teaching resource was on spiritual gifts. The influence of Apostle Wagner through this one book was the catalyst to stir me toward my call as an apostolic scribe writing many resources to teach to this very day.
There would many more books written by Apostle Peter that helped me understand the changing paradigms in the church and the advance of the kingdom. Some of these books were Spreading the Fire: The Acts of the Holy Spirits; Warfare Prayer; Breaking Strongholds in your city; The Making of a Leader; Intercessory Prayer; How God can use your prayers to move Heaven and Earth.
It was through these books that the Lord enlarged my vision for His church and enlarged the path that has taken me from the traditional denominational church to the kingdom of God.
In the 1990’s God called Apostle Peter to be one of the key voices that heralded the restoration of Apostles and Prophets to the church. This required a lot of courage because the voices of condemnation and accusations rose in great clamor against Apostle Peter Wagner and other messengers who carried the same message. But Apostle Peter never backed down from this mandate to help the church receive the recovery of its foundations through the gifts of Apostles and Prophets.
The impact that this one man had on the body of Christ will continue to yield great and abundant fruit in the earth for generations to come. Let us thank the Lord for giving us Apostle C. Peter Wagner; a scribal apostle for our times.
As I watched the memorial service for Apostle Wagner I heard the Lord say that his passing is a sign of reformation of the church.
All reformation involves coming out of error, coming out of corruption, changing wrong beliefs and behaviors, putting an end to abuses and disorders. (Dictionary.Com).
Apostle Wagner has been a champion of reformation. Now let us watch it come in a greater measure in 2017, five hundred years after Martin Luther started a reformation in the church.
