On January 8, 2015 the news was released that Andrae Crouch had died in Los Angeles California. Thousands attended his funeral held at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles.
Pastor Andrae Crouch has been rightly called “the father of modern gospel music.” He created a genre in gospel music that opened a door for entire new sound to enter the church and ultimately the world. He merged a contemporary sound with a church sound and created a new stream that liberated many creative artists of song to release their own unique sound. Apostle Chuck Pierce teaches that new sounds brings forth new seasons. Pastor Crouch brought the church into a new season with his unique sound.
Andrae played the piano for the first time when he was eleven years old when his father was preaching at a church. Andrae taught himself to play the piano and wrote his first song at age 14. When Andrae was fifteen he wrote, “The Blood will never lose its power.”
Andrae’s music was a bridge builder between blacks and whites. Because his sound was non traditional it spoke to and awaken many people of many races. His music tore down some of the walls of racism in the church.
The first time I saw and heard Pastor Crouch was in 1982 when he appeared on the television show The Jefferson. I don’t remember the song he sang but I started following him at that point. When my mother died in June 2003 the entire congregation sang at her funeral Soon and Very Soon, one of Pastor’s Crouch standards.
Andrae Crouch was known to the world as a musician, composer, producer, Grammy Award winner but to a group of people in Pacoima California he was known as Pastor Crouch. He pastored with his sister Pastor Sandra New Christ Memorial Church, a multi generational, multi cultural church.
Andrae was a creative giant, a passionate worshipper but his heart as a preacher of the Gospel compelled him to reach souls reconciling them to God. He was a laborer in the harvest of souls. Even in his concerts he always ended with an appeal for souls to be saved. Only eternity will reveal the abundance of people snatched from the bowels of hell because of the creative sound and passion for the kingdom of God demonstrated by Pastor Andrae Crouch.
Well done Pastor Crouch.
