Tavis Smiley latest literary offering, My Journey with Maya, opens the window to his relationship with Doctor Maya Angelou. In the tribute of this book Tavis acknowledges Maya as one of the mothers in his life.
In chapter 5 Tavis shares a conversation between him and Maya. Doctor Angelou had just delivered a talk about the life of W.E.B. Dubois in the home he lived in the last years of his life in Ghana.
Tavis shared with Maya Angelou a crushing defeat he encountered. And Doctor Angelou’s response was “Only one attitude enabled me to move ahead. That attitude said, ‘Rejection can simply mean redirection.”
That attitude captured in words pierced my heart as I thought about all the rejection that I have encountered in my life. And then I thought about Jesus ministry recorded In Mark 6. Jesus ministered in His hometown of Nazareth and the people rejected him.
But in the next verse it says that Jesus went to other villages teaching. Whenever Jesus was rejected in one place He was redirected to another place.
That’s a good model to follow.
When you are not recognized for the treasure that you are, there’s another place for you to be recognized in.
When someone refuses to accept your gifts, there is someone who will accept your gifts.
Rejection is being thrown out of the place where you don’t belong so that you can be thrown into the place where destiny awaits you.
I want to leave with you how to be redirected after you’ve been rejected.
1. Change your focus. See the possibilities that exist before you.
2. Change your direction. Go forward. Write a new plan.
3. Build on the rejection. Turn it around. See it as a gift that propelled you to move forward.
How are dealing with rejection? How are you being redirected? I would love to read your answers. Write me and let me know.
